Rangers Finally Fire Renney

After a horrible stretch of hockey, the Rangers have finally fired Head Coach Tom Renney. The Rangers got off to a red hot start in 2008-2009, rolling to a 10-2-1 record in October.

However, the Rangers lack of depth and scoring eventually caught up to them and team fell from as far as the number one seed in the East to the fringe, missing the playoffs with 21 games to go.

Renney had coached the Rangers for five and a half years and led the club to three playoff apperances in the last three years. Last season, the Rangers were a strong contender in the East, sweeping the Devils in the first round, and losing in six tough games to Buffalo in the second round.

This year, with the loss of key free agents that helped the team win in 2007-2008, the Rangers were miserable this year. Overall, the Rangers are 31-23-7, but keep in mind that the seven are counted as overtime losses. In short, the Rangers are just a game over .500 at 31-30 this season.

Some speculate that John Tortorella will be the next head coach. Fans have called WFAN asking the for the firing of GM Glenn Sather, who has been a target of the fans hatred for over 10 years.
