Jets Acquire Santonio Holmes From Steelers

What a steel!

The New York Jets have acquired wide receiver Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers for (gasp) a fifth round pick! That's right the Jets didn't have to give up anything for a guy who caught the game winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLIII.

The reason Pittsburgh was willing to part with Holmes relates to an incident with a woman, in which he accused of throwing a drink in March. There are legal matters involved here, so this is no light matter.

If Holmes gets through his legal trouble, the Jets will have one of the best wide receiver corps in the NFL. With the combination of Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, and Holmes Mark Sanchez will have a lot of options to go to this year.

There are two reasons to love the Holmes deal.

First, as you pointed out, they gave up nothing to get him. Even if he only plays 12 games for the Jets and then leaves as a free agent, I feel that merits at least a fifth round pick.

Second, they no longer have to pick a receiver early in the draft, something I was really hoping the Jets wouldn't do. They could use that pick on a defensive lineman or a safety.
